2017 Graduation: AUT University Certificate in Foundation Studies

Graduation ceremonies are always a bittersweet time, where the mutual excitement between students and staff over having successfully completed AUT University Certificate in Foundation Studies runs into the sad reality that we may be spending less time together.

However, the return of past alumni Hon Ting Tang to speak to graduands about her university experience, and Hoa Le to entertain us with a delightful piano recital, spoke to the bonds that last beyond the duration of an academic study programme. A powerful mihi from Foundation teacher John Thorpe and a poignant speech from Principal Mark Haines addressing what we can learn from the Parihaka assault of 1881 and the recent reconciliation ceremony were particularly moving in the context of matariki, and contributed to an ongoing effort to educate our students beyond subject knowledge they need for their exams.

In addition to other speeches both profound and amusing, a great deal of dinner was consumed, photographs of varying levels of decorum taken, and gratitude was expressed from student to teacher, and vice versa, for another great term.
