International First Year Diplomas

International First Year Diplomas are two-semester programs that function as an alternative first year of an undergraduate degree for students who need additional academic and English support in their first year of undergraduate study. Successful completion of the course allows for direct entry into the second year of an undergraduate degree in the program discipline. The overall time taken to complete the degree will be the same as if the student was able to enter the first year of their chosen undergraduate degree directly.

Course structure

  • All programs are two semesters long
  • Start in Semester One (February), Semester Two (July) or Spring Semester (late October)
  • 1 unit of English for Academic Purposes + 7 discipline-specific units
  • Academic level equivalent to first-year undergraduate level
  • Most of the course delivered face to face in lecture theatres and tutorial classrooms
  • Some material delivered in blended mode where certain modules are done online
  • One-week exam period at end of each semester
  • Assessment mirrors that of University of Tasmania undergraduate first-year papers

International First Year Diploma – Science

Successful completion of this program allows direct entry into the second year of the Bachelor of Science degree course. Degree specialisation is available in Aquatic Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Computer Science, Ecology, Food Safety, Genetics, Geography and Environment, Mathematics, Microbiology, Plant Science, Statistics and Operations or Zoology.

The program consists of eight units (four per semester):

  • 3 core units: English for Academic Purposes, Data Handling and Statistics 1, Understanding Science
  • 5 optional units (2 for a major, 2 for a minor and 1 as an elective)

Units replicate the content, delivery and assessment of equivalent degree units at the University of Tasmania, along with specialised English Language and academic support.

To successfully complete the program, a student must pass all units with a grade of 50% or higher.

International First Year Diploma – Business

Successful completion of this program allows for direct entry into the second year of the Bachelor of Business degree course. All majors are available. Students study eight units at first-year undergraduate level (four units each semester over two semesters).

To successfully complete the program, a student must pass all units with a grade of 50% or higher.

Units replicate the content, delivery and assessment of equivalent degree units at the University of Tasmania, along with specialised English language and academic support.

International First Year Diploma – Engineering

Successful completion of this program allows direct entry into the second year of one of the following degree programs:

  • Bachelor of Engineering (Civil Engineering) with Honours
  • Bachelor of Engineering (Electronics and Communications) with Honours
  • Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical and Electronics) with Honours
  • Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical Power) with Honours
  • Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering) with Honours

To successfully complete the program, a student must pass all units with an average grade of 70% or higher*.
Students study eight units at first year undergraduate level (four units each semester over two semesters).

Units replicate the content, delivery and assessment of equivalent degree units at the University of Tasmania, along with specialised English language and academic support.

A satisfactory level of achievement in Mathematics and a Physical Science at secondary school is required for entry into this diploma.

*must equate to a GPA of 6.0 or higher

Applicants must be able to demonstrate English language proficiency as follows:

  • International First Year Diploma – Science – IELTS 5.5 (min. 5.5 in all bands), or equivalent
  • International First Year Diploma – Business – IELTS 5.5 (min. 5.5 in all bands), or equivalent
  • International First Year Diploma – Engineering – IELTS 5.5 (min. 5.5 in all bands), or equivalent

Academic entry requirements

Entry to the UTAS International First Year Diploma program requires completion of high school and an overall grade equivalent to ATAR 50 (Business and Science) or ATAR 70 (Engineering) A full list of equivalents by country is available by clicking here.

Minimum age requirement

The minimum age to study an International First Year Diploma is 17.
