When Yadi Chen finished high school in China she decided she wanted to study at the University of Auckland in New Zealand. To ensure she got into her chosen course, she first enrolled in the University of Auckland Certificate in Foundation Studies programme because it was “the largest and most popular school in New Zealand”.
The decision paid off. After a Foundation Studies year where she studied Physics and Biology to prepare for university study, Yadi later graduated from the University of Auckland with a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Biomedical Engineering. Now she is continuing her education with a PhD in Physiology.
Yadi says studying the University of Auckland Certificate in Foundation Studies turned out to be the right stepping stone for her future university studies. Her advice for students considering a Foundation Studies course?
“Take some time to think about what you like to do, your ideal career. There are so many opportunities and different careers in New Zealand, and some are just starting. Explore all your options during the Foundation Studies year. Examine your likes and dislikes. And use what you learn to decide what you are going to do at university.”
