Our caring and highly-qualified teachers provide the individual attention and support you need to set learning goals, evaluate achievement and maximise success. In addition to 24 hours of lessons each week, individual and small group tutorials and coaching sessions are available to consolidate learning.

Successful graduates receive guaranteed entry into the University of Auckland Certificate in Foundation Studies, the AUT University Certificate in Foundation Studies, the Victoria University of Wellington Foundation Studies Programme and tertiary programmes in Cookery, Hospitality, Digital Design, IT, Management, Travel and Tourism.

In the heart of central Auckland, UP International College is close to public transport and accommodation options. It’s also near the University of Auckland, AUT University, Yoobee Colleges and New Zealand School of Tourism. The campus is fully equipped with modern air-conditioned classrooms, computer rooms, a student common room with cafeteria, student learning centre and library.

Qualified teachers

All UP International College teachers are fully qualified and registered with the New Zealand Teachers’ Council. They are experienced specialist teachers who provide a caring and supportive learning environment, using interactive lessons and lots of personal attention to help students achieve their learning goals.

A choice of activities

We encourage you to make the most of your time in New Zealand so we offer lots of activities beyond the classroom. School staff and tour operators organise sightseeing excursions while our International Student Club offers everything from basketball, badminton and cooking classes to chess and performing arts. Our Student Learning Centre is open on Saturdays for self-study and socialising.

Subjects

Intensive English

Two modules are included within the 24-hours per week lesson schedule:

  • Core and IELTS Academic English
  • Project-based English

Core and IELTS Academic English

This module works on skills development with a strong focus on examination skills. Students spend 16 hours each week developing their English language usage, language structure, vocabulary, reading, listening and writing skills using a set topic. The module includes:
– Receptive skills: Listening and Reading
– Productive skills: Writing and Speaking
– Core language skills: Vocabulary, Grammar and Pronunciation

Project-based English

Students spend eight hours each week using the skills they learned in the above module to develop a weekly presentation, which may include:

-Newspaper production
-Video creation
-Debating
-Podcast creation
-Public speaking

Elective module

Available to students at Academic Level 2 or higher, the Elective module develops English proficiency in a variety of contexts. Students spend an additional six hours a week practising their English skills on a broad range of topics. This is useful for students planning to continue their academic studies after reaching the required English level.

Assessment

Placement test

All new students take a 90-minute placement test as part of our Orientation programme to determine which level you start in.

Promotion test

This tests covers listening, reading, grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, speaking and writing, and is given twice each cycle. If you gain high marks in all skill areas, you may be promoted to the next curriculum level.

Achievement test

Held in the final week of each cycle, this test covers listening, reading, grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and writing. If you successfully complete all skill areas, you may be promoted to the next curriculum level.

UP International College English Language Test

Available to students throughout the year, this test assesses language proficiency using content at independent of the course. Successful students are guaranteed entry to the University of Auckland Certificate in Foundation Studies, the AUT University Certificate in Foundation Studies and Victoria University of Wellington Foundation Studies Programme.

The test has three parts:

  • Listening, consisting of an IELTS-type listening test
  • English usage, with 50 questions
  • Writing, consisting of an academic essay at pre-university level

Entry to University

Many UP International College English students move onto another UP Education programme. This might be one of the three New Zealand foundation programmes that we deliver on behalf of the University of Auckland, AUT University and Victoria University of Wellington.

It is expected that a University of Auckland foundation student will progress to the University of Auckland. Likewise, an AUT foundation student and Victoria University of Wellington Foundation will progress to their respective universities of choice, a few may have a change of plan and want to consider studying overseas.

Students who successfully complete the following UP International College English levels and who meet the academic entry requirements have guaranteed entry into all programmes as below.

We expect students to continue on to the respective university of the foundation programme they are in, but acknowledge that sometimes circumstances change. Admissions

UP International College welcomes students from 13 years of age and older for English studies

Applying to study at UP International College for English study is simple. Applications can be made in person at our UP International campus, online, or by filling out a hard copy application form that can be emailed or posted to us.

How the application process works

Once an application is submitted, our admissions staff will be in touch to help students through the enrolments process.

Fees & documents

After we have received an application, we may ask for more information or documentation. Once we have everything we need, we’ll send a letter of offer along with a schedule of fees. Once an offer is accepted and the fees are paid, we’ll send a receipt and confirmation letter.

Visa & travel essentials

Once a confirmation letter is received, students can apply for a visa and arrange insurance. We will need the student’s flight details so that we can welcome them at the airport, arrange for an airport transfer, and organise accommodation if needed.

Location & Facilities

UP International College has excellent facilities and is located in the heart of central Auckland.

Conveniently located in Auckland’s CBD, UP International College is close to public transport and plenty of accommodation options. Being in the city centre means there’s always something for students to do outside of class – relax in Albert Park, visit Aotea Square, Youthtown or the Town Hall, or take a look at the numerous art galleries and performing arts centres in the local area. UP International College is also near the University of Auckland, AUT, Yoobee Colleges and New Zealand School of Tourism..

The campus is fully equipped with modern air-conditioned classrooms, a student common room, a library and a cafeteria serving espresso coffee, fresh food and drinks. Our computer laboratories are available for independent study from 8:30am to 5:00pm, and all computers have email and internet access.

UP International College Welcome Center

The UP International College Welcome Center is the first stop for new students, and those thinking about enrolling. This is where applications and enrolments are processed, student accommodation is arranged, and course information and extensions are given. It’s also where students go for their orientation programme, visa services and banking help.
